Toilet Seats, Boring or Fun?

So you think toilet seats are boring? I guess you haven't been shopping for a replacement seat lately. It used to be a bit like that old quote attributed to Henry Ford, "you can have any color so long as it's black" I don't think it was true in Fords case and it wasn't quite true in the case of toilet seats.

For many years you had a choice of black, white or wood. Prior to the use of plastic for household goods it was wood or nothing, though you most likely had a choice of wood but of course the more attractive woods like mahogany were expensive.

With the advent of plastic seats there came a new generation of smooth and shiny seats, usually black in color. They were regarded by many as more hygienic than wood, certainly they were easier to clean, and the eliminated the danger of splinters where you least expected them.

It wasn't long before you had the choice of a white seat which a lot of people obviously preferred, believing that it looked more aesthetically pleasing and possibly "cleaner" if you like. Of course wooden seats were still available for those who preferred the look of wood, not to mention the warmth of a wooden toilet seat when compared to the cold plastic ones. Also there were developments in the wood finishes available which made wooden seats easier to clean without the need for scrubbing bare wood.

We haven't yet considered the hardware used to attach the seat to the toilet itself, usually some sort of hinge arrangement with bolts to fix the seat to the porcelain pan. These fittings would usually be of brass for the more expensive seats or iron or steel for the cheaper market. Steel of course rusts very easily, chrome plating can help delay this but unfortunately not forever, and to chrome plate steel means a complicated process of first coating the steel with other metals such as zinc and brass. This also means the fittings cost more. The invention of stainless steel meant you didn't need the complicated plating progress to make rust roof hardware.

Now of course we have an amazing range of plastic seats which often have plastic fitting hardware too. Of course plastic is a pretty basic description for a whole range of synthetic materials from polypropylene to acrylic resin. There are also many wooden seats which have a vinyl coating which makes them durable and easy to clean. When I say wood it can mean some type of wood and resin compound like medium density fibreboard.

Acrylic resins have the added attraction of being available in clear or translucent colors; this means you can embed objects in the resin such as sea shells, dried flowers, pictures even pieces of barbed wire! So now there's a huge range of novelty seats available to match the décor of your bathroom whatever the style you choose and no matter how wild or outrageous. Toilet seats boring, not any more.

The worst thing that can happen is running out of toilet paper after going to the bathroom, especially if there is none left in the house. The person is trouble since he can't clean after himself. When using toilet paper one has to always be aware of how much is left and stock up if there is none left. With the use of the bidet the person does not have worry about running out of toilet paper and does not have worry about going to buy it at late hours of the night. The bidet is always there and as long as there is water in the house, the person will always be able to clean after himself. It will not run out and will always be available to use.

4)The Bidet is More Hygienic

When one wipes with toilet paper it still leaves the smell and the feces still there. If one does not do a good job of cleaning it can cause irritation and can cause itchiness. With the use of the bidet one uses water and cleans the area with water which is better then just wiping with paper. Its the same as when one washes their hand before supper, they don't wipe their hands with toilet paper, they wash it and even use soap. This is the same idea. Using water is always more efficient and hygienic than toilet paper.

5)A Bidet is Quicker and Easier

When using toilet paper, it can take a while to wipe everything and even than one won't do a good job which can lead to stains and irritation. The bidet on the other hand can give a refreshed clean feeling after just using it for 15 seconds. When using a bidet one does not have to constantly wipe. Without water the paper does not leave a clean feeling after being done. It always feels like there's something left. The bidet will clean everything and leave you feeling refreshed after every use with just the click of a button.

How to Install a Bidet Toilet Seat - Simple Step-By-Step Instructions

One-piece vs. two-piece. Most toilets come in two different designs: the one-piece and the two-piece, or close-coupled toilet. Close-coupled toilets are the most common, and tend to be the cheaper type. These employ an attached but separate tank and bowl. One-piece toilets have a tank built into the back of the bowl. These tend to be easier to clean, because there's no small gap between the tank and the bowl. However, they're usually more expensive. One-piece models have a lower profile than close-coupled toilets, and some redesigners like the more compact profile.

Seat shape and size. Toilet bowls come in either round or elongated models. Elongated seats are generally about two inches longer, and provide a bit more surface area--making the toilet a bit more comfortable than the round variety. Round toilets are smaller, and better for tight spaces. If you have the space for it, however, you may appreciate the comfort of an elongated bowl.

The flush system. Most toilets operate on a gravity flush system. Old-fashioned toilets with wall-mounted tanks relied on the height of the tank to increase the head pressure. Gravity-flush toilets are the most common and least expensive type.

Pressure-assisted flushing mechanisms, however, are gaining in popularity. These incorporate a cylinder of pressurized air inside the toilet tank to provide force to the flushing mechanism. These types of toilets typically have a loud, forceful flush, and are often used in commercial bathrooms.

Some cutting-edge toilet manufacturers offer dual-flush toilets that can help you save water. These offer a "half flush" for liquid waste and a "full flush" for solid waste. This lets you adjust the amount of water you use for lighter or heavier loads.

The trapway. The trapway is the part of the toilet through which water and waste exit. The larger the trapway, the better. A larger trapway allows for better flushing action and less risk of clogs. In addition, when you're in the store, be sure to ask if a toilet's trapway is fully glazed. A fully glazed trapway has a smoother surface. It can improve flushing performance and make the bowl easier to clean.

Toilet height. Toilets come in many different sizes and heights. If there are any senior citizens living in your home, they may find a higher toilet to be more comfortable--they won't have to lower themselves as far to sit down on it. If you have young children, you may want to consider a shorter toilet so they can access it more easily.

Attachment method. Whether you choose a floor-mounted or wall-mounted toilet will depend on the plumbing in your bathroom. The drain line in your bathroom is the pipe that takes the water and waste from your toilet bowl to the sewer or septic tank, and this can be either a floor-discharge or wall-discharge design. If you have a floor-discharge drain line, your toilet will need to be bolted to the floor. A wall-discharge drain line requires a wall-mounted toilet. You can find both gravity and pressure-assisted toilets in both designs.

Extra features. There are many extra features that can make a toilet more sanitary and luxurious. These include heated seats; motorized seats that lower automatically; ceramic glazes that make the toilet largely antibacterial; built-in bidet and drying features; insulation that prevents condensation on the outside of the bowl; and more.

The toilet may not be the most glamorous item in your bathroom, but it's one of the most necessary. Take your time when choosing a toilet. Be sure to measure the distance between the wall and the drain line opening, if you have a floor-discharge drain line. With a wall-discharge drain line, measure the distance between the floor and the drain line. With these measurements, you can be sure to find the right toilet for your bathroom.
